To try to stop the arrival and spread of cholera in Gateshead a local board of health was set up. This divided Gateshead into sections. Each section was investigated and reported on. Help was then given where needed in the form of white wash, blankets and soup tickets. However, it was too little too late. 222 people died of cholera in the 1831-32 outbreak of cholera in Gateshead alone.
