What is this item?

This is a medieval breviary, a service book from the Middle Ages that contains all the text that is needed for a church service.

The book contains hymns, offices (which divide the day into fixed prayers that were to be delivered at regular intervals) and prayers. The pages are all handwritten, with some pages being highly illustrated with gold detailing and vibrant colours.

When was it created?

We’re not sure when exactly it was created but we do know that it was produced during the 15th Century (the 1400s).

Where is it from?

This breviary is Flemish, which means that it come from Flanders (northern Belgium).

Why was it used?

The hymns and prayers contained within the breviary were used by the Roman Catholic clergy (e.g. a priest) during a Catholic Church service.
